Emergency Plumber in Pocatello, ID

In a Pocatello winter, an emergency often starts with a pipe that froze overnight and split as the house warmed up. Whatever the cause, the first steps are the same.

Close the main valve

Many Pocatello homes have the main shut-off in the basement or crawl space where the line comes through the foundation, often near the water heater. Close it all the way, then open a faucet at the lowest point in the house to let the lines drain and take pressure off the break.

Mind the electricity

If water is pooling near the furnace, the water heater or the electrical panel, don't step into it. Switch off the circuits for the wet area from a dry spot if you can; if not, leave the area and contact the power company. Wet basements and live wiring are a serious hazard.

Water from the ceiling

A sagging, wet ceiling under a bathroom can give way without warning. Put a bucket underneath and keep people out of the room. If it's safe, a small hole at the lowest point lets the water drain into the bucket instead of spreading across the ceiling.

Sewage in the basement

If sewage is coming up a floor drain or basement fixture, stop using water anywhere in the house. Every flush or load of laundry adds to the backup. Keep children and pets away, and leave chemical drain cleaners on the shelf.

Frozen and split lines

Pipes that burst in a freeze often leak only once they thaw. If the water has been off overnight from a frozen line and you suddenly hear running water inside a wall, close the main straight away and look for wet spots.

What to send

Where the water is coming from, whether the main is off, how long it ran and what it reached. Photos taken from a safe spot help. Send a request and a plumber will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Will a plumber come out on a winter night?
Many plumbers take emergency calls after hours, especially during cold snaps. The plumber who contacts you confirms timing and any after-hours rate before setting off.
What if the main valve won't turn?
Don't force it. Contact the city water department to shut the curb valve, and have the stuck valve replaced once the leak is repaired.
