The Gate City
Pocatello was founded in 1889 and became known as the "Gate City" as a gateway to Idaho and the Pacific Northwest, growing up around the Union Pacific junction. Today it is the county seat of Bannock County, with 56,320 people at the 2020 census, and home to Idaho State University. Older neighborhoods near the rail yards and campus have homes that are a century old, often with original drains. See sewer and septic lines.
High, dry and cold
The city sits at 4,462 feet on the Portneuf River, with a cold semi-arid climate. Summers have reached 104°F, and the record low is −33°F, set on February 1, 1985. Cold that deep reaches pipes in crawl spaces, garages and exterior walls, and can freeze shallow service lines too. Our winterizing guide covers what to do before it arrives.

Common questions
Will a plumber come out on a winter night?
Many plumbers take emergency calls after hours, especially during cold snaps. The plumber who contacts you confirms timing and any after-hours rate before setting off.
How long can a pipe stay frozen before it bursts?
There's no set time. Pressure builds between the ice and the closed faucet, so the sooner it's thawed with the faucet open, the better.
Why does my floor drain back up when the washer runs?
The line is probably narrowed by lint and soap, or the main is partly blocked. A cleaning usually solves it; a camera can check for damage.
Should I flush my water heater?
Draining a few gallons once or twice a year helps clear sediment and scale. If the valve hasn't been opened in years, a plumber can do it safely.
Who owns the sewer line?
Usually the homeowner, from the house to the city main. The City of Pocatello can tell you where its part starts.
