Checking an Idaho Plumbing License
Idaho licenses plumbers and plumbing contractors through the state, so you can check who you're hiring before any work starts.
Request a plumberWho licenses plumbers
In Idaho, plumbers and plumbing contractors are licensed through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL).
Look it up
Ask for the plumber's or company's license number and look it up on the DOPL website. Check that it's active.
Permits
Water heater replacements, new lines, sewer repairs and remodels often need a permit and inspection. Ask who will arrange it and when the inspector will visit.
Quotes in writing
For bigger jobs, ask for a written quote that lists the work, materials and permit, and compare quotes by what's included.
Red flags
Requests for full payment upfront, no license number, or suggestions to skip the permit are reasons to slow down.
Ready to start
Send a request with the details. See our services.
Questions to ask
Who will do the work, and what license do they hold? Is the business insured? How long will the water be off? What warranty covers the labor and new equipment? Clear answers to these are a good sign you've found a careful plumber.
After the job
Keep the invoice, permit and warranty papers with your home records, and note the brand and model of anything installed. If something fails later, those details make it much faster for the same plumber, or a new one, to help.
Gas work
If a job involves a gas water heater, furnace connection or gas line, make sure the person doing it is licensed for gas work as well. Ask before the work starts.
